In
particular, carbon content adjusts melting properties
providing the system with suitable melting rate.
It also avoids excessive sintering of the powder
layers, dumping thermal conductivity of the material.
Mold fluxes have different functions:
To provide chemical protection of molten steel
from oxidation;
To provide thermal insulation preventing solidification
of steel surface and bridging in the sintered
powder layer;
To lubricate the strand to the mould to provide
uniform heat transfer between the strand and the
mould wall;
To absorb inclusions in molten slag pool.
